Fees and Regulation

Regulation

Midwifery is one of the most regulated professions in the UK. This is the same whether we practice independently or within the NHS. All midwives are registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council. This governing body ensures that we practice in a safe and professional manner.  In order to stay registered with the NMC, we must remain updated in current research-based practice.

Insurance

PLEASE NOTE: From the 11th January 2017 independent midwives are unable to provide labour and birth care, either at home or in hospital . This is due to restrictions placed on the practice of all Independent Midwifery UK (IMUK) members by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). For more information please see: http://www.imuk.org.uk/news/nmc-decision-regarding-indemnity-arrangements-for-imuk-members/. A legal challenge is currently underway and we are hopeful that our usual practice will be resumed and women’s birth rights will continue to be protected..

Fees

We at Cambridge Midwives have carefully considered our practice in the light of this news and can deliver two different care options:

Sarah Murray RM is fully compliant under RCN regulations and can provide packages of antenatal care from booking until you go into labour at a cost of £2,200 and/or postnatal care from birth covering a 28 day period at a cost of £1850. I have not put up prices since 2014 but sadly have been forced to by economic forces.

Please note: if you have healthcare insurance via your employer, they often provide midwifery care as part of your health package. In this case, payment will need to be made by you after the anomaly scan circa 20 weeks, whilst you seek reimbursement directly from your insurance company. (Sadly we have found that insurance companies pay clients immediately, but take a very long while to pay us!)

Our own associate doula, Becky Talbot, will be on call from 38 weeks until 42 weeks and can support labour and be your advocate either in hospital (Birth Centre or Delivery Unit), or in the home (price on request), with an NHS midwife in attendance. Becky will meet you from 36 weeks for two antenatal and postnatal visits, one alongside Sarah, as well as providing telephone, What’s App and email support as part of the care pathway alongside Sarah to ensure continuity of care and carer.

Please feel free to ring us for further information.

As professional and experienced professionals with a duty of care to you and your baby we do not offer discounts.

Telephone consultations lasting 30 mins for one- off queries are charged at £30 payable in advance. If you later decide to take us on, this will be deducted from the overall cost.

One-off appointments in your home to give advice , support and information covering issues such as birth plans, introduction to breastfeeding, VBAC, gentle C-section,  post dates births/getting into labour and Induction of Labour can be made at a rate of £150.00.

The Birth and Beyond package in your home is £175.

I can’t recommend Sarah highly enough. She first supported us when I was pregnant with our first daughter in 2018. The information she provided meant we had a really good experience when I gave birth at the Rosie Birth Centre. She also provided us with postnatal support which go us off to a fantastic start with breastfeeding.
She supported us again with my son in 2021. With Sarah’s support and guidance we had a fantastic home birth experience and I’m so grateful to her for this.
I’m not pregnant with my third child due imminently and can’t thank Sarah enough for her reassurance and support. We are planning another home birth again.
Sarah is so knowledgeable, supportive and positive. She ensures you know and understand your rightd which gives you the confidence to successfully advocate for yourself. She is a lovely person and is so giving with her time and expertise. Thank you Sarah x
Emma P.
